Joann Fabrics plans to shut down more than half of its remaining stores across the country after another Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a year.

In a motion filed Wednesday in bankruptcy court, the 82-year-old fabric and craft giant announced it is seeking to close approximately 533 of its 800 locations in the U.S., citing sluggish sales and inventory issues, including $616 million in “untenable” debt.

The states with the most Joann Fabric store closures are California (61), Florida (36), Pennsylvania (33), Ohio (33), and Michigan (33). New Jersey has six stores slated to close, 24 in New York, and one more in Delaware.

In a statement, Joann said it is looking to “right-size its store footprint.”

“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our Team Members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,” reads Joann’s statement. “A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the Company determined which stores should remain operating as usual at this time.”
