Jisoo’s Billboard Debut Is Something Of A Letdown

Jisoo has been a global superstar for years as a member of Blackpink, one of the most successful girl groups in modern music history. While her bandmates all ventured into solo careers not long ago — and found plenty of success — she was the last to make the leap. When she did, it was with a quiet, understated release, and until now, that solo effort failed to make any real noise in the United States. That changes this week, as Jisoo finally reaches a Billboard chart on her own… but her performance is not quite as strong as some might have hoped.

Jisoo’s Amortage Debuts

Jisoo’s Amortage opens at No. 11 on the Top Album Sales chart. The Billboard tally ranks the bestselling albums, EPs, and other projects in the U.S. based entirely on pure purchases, meaning digital and physical sales.

According to Luminate, the EP sold just under 7,000 copies in the most recent tracking frame. That figure is enough to put her on the one chart. Amortage does not appear on the Billboard 200, which ranks the most-consumed titles across formats, factoring in not just sales, but also streaming activity. That tally is usually considered the most important for albums in the U.S., and the Blackpink star misses out on earning a spot.

Amortage’s Delayed Arrival

Jisoo released Amortage on February 14, making it something of a Valentine’s Day gift to fans. The EP didn’t appear on any Billboard chart immediately following its drop. That appears to be largely because it wasn’t made available in a physical format until recently. Without CDs or vinyl, an album or EP often struggles to make a commercial impact in America — especially when streaming numbers don’t make up the difference.

Jisoo Misses the Top 10 – Unlike Her Bandmates

Amortage narrowly misses the top 10 on the Top Album Sales chart, settling at No. 11. While that’s a respectable start for many artists, it doesn’t quite stack up compared to the achievements of her bandmates.

Rosé, Jennie, and Lisa have all scored top 10 placements on the same tally with their respective solo projects. In fact, all of them launched their solo efforts inside the top three on the ranking.

Jisoo’s Debut is a Letdown

The performance of Amortage might be described as underwhelming, especially when viewed next to the solo successes of the other Blackpink members. Rosé’s Rosie peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, thanks in large part to her Bruno Mars-assisted single “Apt,” which remains a hit across a number of Billboard charts to this day.

Lisa and Jennie both launched full-lengths in recent months as well. Alter Ego and Ruby, respectively, debuted and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200.

Jisoo, on the other hand, has yet to crack the Billboard 200 on her own. Whether that’s due to a lack of promotion, an absence of a standout hit, or simply lesser interest in her solo work is uncertain, but it could be a combination of any of them, or perhaps all three. Perhaps she’ll have better luck with a full-length album in the future.
