Owen Cooper in “Adolescence.”
Adolescence star Owen Cooper — who plays 13-year-old murder suspect Jamie Miller in the Netflix hit — is appearing in Margot Robbie’s next movie.
Jamie, of course, is at the center of Adolescence, which instantly became a global sensation on Netflix after it was released on March 13.
In the limited series — which consists of four episodes that take place in real-time and are all achieved with one camera take — Jamie is suspected in the murder of a 13-year-old female schoolmate named Katie. Episode 1 concentrates on Jamie’s arrest and interrogation, while Episode 2 follows a pair of detectives (Ashley Walters and Faye Marsay) into Jamie’s school to hopefully get some leads in the case.
Episode 3, which takes place seven months after Katie’s murder, largely takes place in a meeting room at a juvenile detention center, where a child psychologist (Erin Doherty) interviews Jamie to get a sense of the teen’s mental health before his trial.
Episode 4 takes place 13 months after the murder, as Jamie’s father, Eddie (Stephen Graham), and mother, Manda (Christine Tremarco) try to hold themselves together while facing hatred as the young teen awaits his trial.
According to Variety, Cooper has already been cast in his first movie role following Adolescence with Wuthering Heights, writer-director Emerald Fennell’s big-screen adaptation of author Emily Brontë’s classic 1847 novel. Fennell, who most recently wrote and directed the psychological drama Saltburn, won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for 2020’s psychological crime thriller Promising Young Woman.
Triple Oscar-nominee Margot Robbie will star in Wuthering Heights as Catherine Earnshaw, while Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, Saltburn) will play Heathcliff.
Per Variety, Cooper will star as the young version of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights — which is expected to be released in theaters on Feb. 13, 2026— while another newcomer, Charlotte Mellington, will play the young Catherine.
Variety reported that Cooper was cast as the young Heathcliffe while Adolescence was still in production. In additon to Wuthering Heights, Cooper, per the Daily Mail, has also been cast in the U.K. miniseries Film Club.
‘Adolescence’ Director Is Astonished By Owen Cooper’s Performance As Jamie
In an interview with Variety, Philip Barantini — who directs all four episodes of Adolescence — said he was amazed by what Owen Cooper achieved by Owen Cooper given the limited series marks his debut as an actor.
“Actors train for years and years and still can’t really master what Owen has done,” Barantini told Variety.
Also speaking with Variety, Cooper, who was 14 when he filmed Adolescence, said he did “literally nothing” when came to acting before he started to pursue the key role of Jamie in the limited series.
“I only really wanted to start acting a couple of years ago,” Cooper told Variety. “It’s not been long. I grew up wanting to be a footballer. I don’t know what it was that made me want to do it, but I just wanted to do it. And then I went to lessons and enjoyed it. And then I got into a little agency thing, and then I got a self-tape request for Adolescence. And everything came from that really.”
Co-created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, Adolescence has been a massive hit for Netflix. Per the streamer, the limited series amassed 24.3 million views — which equates to 93 million viewing hours — in its first four days of release to top Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV Shows chart.
