Jacobs has been chosen by US-based company PsiQuantum to provide master planning, schematic design, and owner’s engineer services for a utility-scale quantum computer facility in Brisbane, Australia.
Located adjacent to Brisbane Airport, the 540,000ft² development will feature a main office building, a large-scale cryoplant, and the Quantum Computing Center itself, which will house the utility-scale quantum computer.
Quantum computers reportedly have the potential to process data far beyond the capabilities of today’s supercomputers.
PsiQuantum’s quantum computer is designed to tackle problems seen as unmanageable by conventional or AI computers.
Jacobs global operations president Patrick Hill said: “Over the past year, Jacobs has collaborated closely with PsiQuantum designing and validating the plans for this facility”
“As we transition into the owner’s engineer phase, we will draw on more than 30 years of experience delivering high-tech, mission-critical projects across various markets to ensure the facility is secure, scalable and easy to replicate.”
The project aligns with Australia’s National Quantum Strategy, aiming to establish a robust domestic quantum industry.
The construction, scheduled to start later in 2025, is set for completion by the end of 2027.
Additionally, Jacobs has also secured a ten-year early contract renewal with the City of Americus in Georgia, US.
Since 1994, Jacobs has managed the city’s water production and wastewater facilities. The renewed contract, running through 2037, includes overseeing an upgrade to the city’s water treatment infrastructure.
Jacobs operations and maintenance staff will collaborate with consulting and engineering teams to enhance asset performance as part of the renewal.
In January this year, Jacobs was awarded a contract worth $249m by the US Army Corps of Engineers Japan District. This contract involves providing architecture and engineering services for the US Department of Defense.
