Italy’s Meloni breaks with Trump over Iran war

The US-Israeli strikes expose the “evident crisis of international law,” the prime minister has said

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, has criticized the US-Israeli war on Iran, branding it part of a dangerous trend “outside international law.” She also condemned a deadly strike on an Iranian school widely attributed to the US.

Meloni delivered the remarks during an address to the Italian Senate on Wednesday, placing the strikes within what she called an “evident crisis of international law and the collapse of a shared world order.”

“It is in this context of structural crisis in the international system… that we must also place the American and Israeli intervention against the Iranian regime,” she stated.

Meloni also condemned what she called a “massacre of little girls” at a school in Minab in southern Iran, calling for an investigation into a strike that killed at least 170 people, most of them children.

While the Italian leader did not say who she thought was to blame for the attack, multiple US media outlets have reported that the school was hit by a US Tomahawk missile. Trump has dismissed the claims, suggesting it was Iran that bombed the school.

Meloni’s remarks come as the war on Iran remains unpopular among the Italian public, who are fearful of being drawn into the hostilities. The prime minister, meanwhile, is herself facing an upcoming high-stakes referendum on judicial reform.

In addition, Italy was reportedly not among the US allies in Europe that were warned before the strikes were launched. Opposition leader Matteo Renzi has used the situation to mock Meloni, dismissing the notion that the Italian leader is “the bridge between Trump and Europe” as “fake news.”

Meloni is widely known for her warm ties with Trump. She was the only European leader at Trump’s January 2025 inauguration, and after their White House meeting in April 2025, the US president called her “a fantastic leader” who had “taken Europe by storm.”

Trump’s Iran campaign has exacerbated the US-EU rift. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been the most vocal critic, calling the strikes “reckless and illegal” – triggering a threat from Trump to “cut off all trade” with Madrid. French President Emmanuel Macron has been less scathing, but also said the strikes have been “conducted outside the framework of international law.”
