Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reacted to the horrific assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, calling it “a profound wound for democracy and for those who believe in freedom.”

“Shocking news of the killing of Charlie Kirk, a young and widely followed Republican activist,” Meloni wrote in a Instagram post on Wednesday. “A heinous murder, a profound wound for democracy and for those who believe in freedom.”

“My condolences to his family, his loved ones, and to the American conservative community,” the Italian Prime Minister added.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also reacted, writing, “Charlie Kirk was only 31 years old. A husband, a father of two, a man devoted to his family and his country, a proud supporter of freedom.”

“He was killed during a public meeting while defending his ideas,” Salvini added. “It’s terrible: no one can die like this. A prayer for him and a heartfelt embrace to his family.”

As Breitbart News reported, Kirk was fatally shot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday in an apparent political assassination.

An abundance of tributes poured in following the gruesome assassination, including a statement from President Donald Trump, who called Kirk’s death “a dark moment for America.”

“Charlie inspired millions, and tonight, all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror,” President Trump said. “Charlie was a patriot who devoted his life to the cause of open debate, and the country that he loved so much, the United States of America.”

Watch Below:

“He fought for liberty, democracy, justice, and the American people. He’s a martyr for truth and freedom, and there’s never been anyone who was so respected by youth,” the president continued. “Charlie was also a man of deep, deep faith.”

“It’s long past time for all Americans and the media to confront the fact that violence and murder are the tragic consequence of demonizing those with whom you disagree day after day, year after year, in the most hateful and despicable way possible,” Trump added.

President Trump went on to point out that “for years, those on the radical left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals.”

“This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today, and it must stop right now,” the president said. “My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity.”

On Thursday morning, the FBI Office in Salt Lake City released photos of a “person of interest” in connection with Kirk’s assassination and asked for “the public’s help.”
