Paramount PicturesSonic The Hedgehog 3—starring James Marsden, Jim Carrey and the voices of Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba and Ben Schwartz—appears to be headed to digital streaming this week.
Directed by Jeff Fowler—the filmmaker behind the first two Sonic the Hedgehog movies—Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened in theaters on Dec. 20 and captured the box office crown in its first weekend of release.
The logline for the film reads, “Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance.”
Schwartz, Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey reprise their voice roles as Sonic, Knuckles and Tails, while Reeves joins the voice cast as Shadow. Marsden and Carrey reprise their roles of Tom Wachowski and Dr. Robotnik in Shadow the Hedgehog 3, which also stars Tika Sumpter, Krysten Ritter, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally and Shemar Moore.
According to When to Stream, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is expected to debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Jan. 21. While the streaming tracker is typically accurate with their PVOD reports, When to Stream noted that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 studio Paramount Pictures has not announced or confirmed the release date and it is subject to change.
When Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrives on PVOD, it will be available on such digital platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV and Fandango at Home. Prime Video currently has Sonic the Hedgehog 3 available for pre-order for $24.99, which is a reflection of the movie’s digital purchase price.
Typically, digital rentals on PVOD are $5 less than the purchase price, so viewers can expect to rent Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for $19.99 for a 48-hour period which begins once the viewer starts watching the movie.
Keanu Reeves Returns To Voice Work In ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’
While Keanu Reeves is known widely to audiences for his work in The Matrix and John Wick film franchises, he occasionally checks into a recording booth to do voice work for films.
Among Reeves’ voice roles are Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4, Sage in 2020’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and Batman in 2022’s DC’s League of Super-Pets.

Samir Hussein/WireImageIn an interview with CBS Mornings before the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in December, Reeves reflected on the process of doing voice roles.
“There’s something really special about the concentration and the way that you have to articulate the voice and express,” Reeves said. “I find it really exhilarating.”
In particular, Reeves told CBS Mornings that the role of Shadow came with challenge of finding the character’s deep emotions.
“I went searching and looking … trying to find my inner Shadow and bring it out to the fore,” Reeves told CBS Mornings.
Rated PG, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is expected to arrive on PVOD on Tuesday. The film is still playing in theaters nationwide.
