A child has died after they were struck by a school bus in Boston’s Hyde Park area on Monday, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said.

At around 2:44 p.m., officers learned of a pedestrian struck by a school bus at 107 Washington St. in Hyde Park, Boston police said in a short statement.

“I am completely heartbroken at imagining what this family is experiencing right now,” Mayor Michelle Wu said during a press conference that afternoon. “No parent expects that they could send their child off to school and have something horrible happen.”

Wu was with Cox and Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden, speaking to reporters. Cox confirmed that the person struck was a child and that the child was pronounced dead.

“We are in the beginning of an investigation, a fairly serious investigation, into this tragedy, and it will be ongoing for a little while here,” Cox told reporters.

Officers and homicide detectives, along with Boston firefighters and EMS, arrived at the scene to investigate, police said. As the crash remains under investigation, it’s unclear if the driver could face charges, Hayden said later in the day.
