Wicked, which has earned more than $729 million at the worldwide box office since the film’s Nov. 22, 2024, opening (per The Numbers), was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress for Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Grande.
In addition, the film was nominated for Oscars for Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing, Best Sound and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
However, Wicked only took home two Oscars, for Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell and Best Production Design for Lee Sandeles and Nathan Crowley.
The win for Best Costume Design was a historic moment for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since Tazewell was the first Black man to win an Oscar in the category.
Oscars 2025 Viewers Were Treated To Singing By Cynthia Erivo And Ariana Grande
While Wicked wasn’t eligible for Best Original Song nominations — all of the tunes in the film are from the Wicked Broadway musical — viewers of the 97th Oscars were still treated to performances by the film musical’s stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande to begin the celebration.
Grande opened the three-song set with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, while Erivo sang “Home” from The Wiz. The duo then went on to perform “Defying Gravity” together from Wicked.

FilmMagicWhile Wicked came up short in eight of the 10 categories it was nominated in for the 97th Oscars, Erivo, Grande and several of the film’s nominees could be back at the Oscars in 2026.
The second chapter in the film series, Wicked: For Good, will be released in theaters on Nov. 21.
It will also give the film’s director Jon M. Chu — who missed out on a Best Directing nomination for the 97th Oscars — a chance to land the prestigious nomination for the 98th annual ceremony.
Anora was the big winner at the 97th Oscars, which were held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.
The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Mikey Madison, as well as Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing for Sean Baker.
Adrien Brody took the Oscar for Best Actor for The Brutalist, while Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldaña took the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for A Real Pain and Emilia Pérez, respectively.
