What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these South Bend Tribune newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

April 13, 1905: “Elkhart, Ind., April 13. — “That is the composite of the electrical and mechanical brains of the country,” said H. E. Bucklen, of Chicago, president of the St. Joseph Valley Traction company, as he pointed to a photograph of the electric motor car which has been in successful daily operation on that part of the company’s line, which has been built — the 10 miles between Lagrange and Shipshewana — since March 29.”

April 14, 1910: “Failure of airbrakes to work properly caused the telescoping of a freight car in the middle of a train and a general tie-up in traffic on the Lake Shore railroad at Marietta street this morning. When applied the brakes worked satisfactorily in the front portion of the train, but failed to do so in the rear. The engine and front cars were stopped while the rear cars continued to move, telescoping a car in the middle of the train.”

April 15, 1923: “Plans for the new home for the Progress club calling for the wrecking of the present building on North Main Street and the erection of a new two-story structure on the club site are fast nearing completion.”

April 16, 1938: “Elkhart, Ind., April 16. — State police Friday afternoon continued their activities in rounding up alcohol runners transporting their wares across northern Indiana from Chicago to Ohio cities, by arresting two Berwyn, Ill., men and confiscating approximately 160 gallons of illicit liquor.”

April 17, 1944: “Exhibits of the food treats which are sent every week by the Service Men’s Center to the sick bay at the United States navy midshipmen’s school at the University of Notre Dame, will be a feature of the open house at the center, 107 West Colfax avenue, from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday. The affair marks the second birthday anniversary of the center.”

April 18, 1950: “The annual spring flower show in the Potawatomi park greenhouse, which closed Sunday, was pronounced a distinct success to-day by Robert Canten, city park department florist. He said that the total attendance for the week, 6,404, sets a new record for the annual show.”

April 19, 1960: “The Board of Education at its regular meeting Monday afternoon in the School Administration Bldg. heard a request to keep the Western Ave. Branch Library open for a trial period of at least six months after a new large branch on the far west side is opened.”
