Road trippers heading north from Louisville might hit a snag around the Indianapolis area when the I-65 Safety and Efficiency Project begins.
Here’s a look at what the massive series of improvements on the interstate will mean for drivers.
What part of I-65 will be under construction in Indiana? Why?
The I-65 Safety and Efficiency Project will affect about 5 miles of highway spanning from the I-465 interchange to north of Fletcher Avenue in Indianapolis. Improvements include replacing bridges, repaving and adding a travel lane to reduce traffic congestion.
Indiana officials said the project will help traffic flow and improve safety.
When does the I-65 construction project start?
The project begins later this spring, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Two lanes of travel in each direction will be open “most of the time” during construction, according to INDOT. Both southbound and northbound I-65 will be closed for three weekends each throughout 2025 and 2026.

Construction is expected to last two years, according to INDOT.
