Former Vice President Kamala Harris returned to the trail for the first time since her presidential election defeat, campaigning in a hard-fought Tennessee special election where Democrats are hoping to score an upset.
Harris made an unexpected appearance at a canvass launch in Nashville on Tuesday to rally supporters of Aftyn Behn, the Democratic nominee in the Dec. 2 special election in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District. Former GOP Rep. Mark Green won the district by 21 points in 2024 before resigning from Congress earlier this year.
Kirsten Allen, a spokesperson for Harris, confirmed her appearance at the Tennessee event to POLITICO, which was first reported by The New York Times.
The event marks Harris’ reentry into national Democratic politics since her defeat to President Donald Trump last year. Since then, Harris has made several appearances to promote her book on the campaign, which made headlines for criticizing Democrats and assigning blame for her loss.
Harris also cut an ad supporting the campaign to pass the California ballot measure to redraw that state’s congressional districts, and spoke at a rally with her home-state Democrats supporting the measure days before the election.
Early voting has already begun in the special election, where Democrats are optimistic despite the district’s strong Republican lean.
Two GOP super PACs — the Trump-affiliated MAGA Inc. PAC and Club for Growth — bought ads for Republican candidate Matt Van Epps on Tuesday, an indication that Republicans may be looking to fend off Democratic momentum in the district after Democrats swept off-year elections around the country earlier this month.
