Gulf state accuses Iran of infiltration attempt on strategic island

Kuwait has claimed four men linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards tried to enter Bubiyan Island by sea

Kuwait has accused Iran of attempting to infiltrate the strategic Bubiyan Island after authorities arrested four men suspected of belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Bubiyan, Kuwait’s largest island, lies at the northern edge of the Gulf near the Iraqi border and is considered strategically important because of its proximity to shipping routes and northern oilfields. The island also hosts a US military base.

Kuwait’s Interior Ministry said on Tuesday that four men were arrested after attempting to enter the country by sea and allegedly clashing with security forces, wounding a Kuwaiti soldier.

The incident took place on May 1, the ministry said, adding that the suspects were detained aboard what it described as a fishing boat chartered for “hostile actions” against Kuwait.

“During interrogation, the infiltrators admitted that they belong to Iran’s IRGC,” state news agency KUNA quoted the ministry as saying.

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry called the alleged incursion a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty, demanded Iran cease “unlawful hostile acts,” and added that it had summoned Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Totoonji to deliver a formal protest note.

Iran dismissed the allegations as baseless. In a statement carried by ISNA news agency, Tehran said the Kuwaiti authorities had acted improperly against four Iranian sailors aboard the vessel Meroj Keshtezri Darya, which it said entered Kuwaiti territorial waters accidentally because of a navigational system failure during a routine patrol. Iran also accused Kuwait of exploiting the incident for political purposes and demanded consular access and the sailors’ release.

China reveals four red lines ahead of Trump visit

The accusation came just hours before US President Donald Trump was due to depart for China for talks focused on the Iran conflict, and was seen by some commentators as an attempt to increase pressure on Tehran as the island is also home to a port project backed by Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Last month, Iran said it had struck a US helicopter training center in Kuwait, along with warehouses storing helicopter equipment, and reported strikes on US HIMARS systems stationed on Bubiyan Island.

Tensions in the Gulf have surged since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and US allies hosting American military bases in the region, while disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
