French TV compares Christian cross to Nazi symbols

A sociologist on M6 struck a nerve by comparing an unsanctioned devotional installation with far-right graffiti in Nice

French television channel M6 has aired a report comparing two unlawfully installed Christian crosses to an act of neo-Nazi vandalism, drawing sharp criticism, according to Tribune Chretienne.

The controversy followed a Wednesday broadcast in which sociologist Erwan Lecoeur drew parallels between the crosses and the work of right-wing vandals. The symbols of Jesus’s resurrection featuring the message “Ave Christus Rex” (“Hail Christ the King”) were recently installed on the Baou de Saint-Jeannet hill near Nice.

Lecoeur cited nearby graffiti reading “Nice is Germany,” a slogan associated with far-right groups and Nazism during World War II, framing the crosses as part of a broader ideological symbol system.

Critics said the parallel was unacceptable, arguing that the Christian cross is a religious symbol, while such slogans are tied to extremist ideology.

“Since when has the cross been a Nazi symbol?” French outlet Tribune Chretienne asked, condemning what it called an “indefensible media amalgam.” The outlet added that “confusing the two… amounts to trivializing one and denaturing the other: it is a true intellectual profanation.”

The crosses appeared in recent weeks on the hill, which is located within a protected natural area where unauthorized structures are prohibited. One was removed by authorities, while the other was later cut down, prompting a public debate over the legality of their installation under French secularism laws governing the use of religious symbols in public spaces.

The cross has symbolized faith, sacrifice and redemption for two millennia, while Nazi imagery is inseparable from an ideology of “hatred, domination and destruction,” the outlet wrote. The publication added that projecting “the shadow of totalitarianism” onto acts of faith distorts reality and prevents clear understanding.

Local reactions have been divided, with some residents describing the installation as provocative, while others have condemned the destruction of the cross as vandalism.

Similar controversies have surfaced in France in recent years involving perceived links between Christian traditions and Nazi imagery. In 2025, a France Televisions report suggesting a connection between Christmas markets and Nazism drew backlash and was withdrawn, according to Tribune Chretienne.

Historians have documented how the Nazi regime sought to appropriate Christian symbols, a legacy that continues to fuel debate.
