Former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) is launching another bid for U.S. Senate in Michigan ― this time to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.
The 61-year-old former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee made the announcement in a video posted on social media on Monday.
“I’ll stand with President Trump and we will deliver given to him on the mandate given to him by the American people,” Rogers vowed. “For too long, we’ve been represented by two-faced politicians who say they’re moderates but vote as radicals when they’re elected. That ends now.”
The Michigan Republican narrowly lost to Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) in last year’s Senate election to replace former Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow. Republicans hope this time will be different for the seven-term congressman who retired from the House in 2015.
“Mike will always put Michigan first, fight for the needs of working families, and stand up to communist China,” National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said in a statement.“Michigan is a battleground state, and with Mike as our candidate, I know we will add this seat to President Trump’s Senate Majority in 2026.”
Rogers said his campaign would focus on protecting Social Security, improving the quality of education, and lowering the cost of living. He’ll be running in what is expected to be a tough political environment for the GOP, with economic uncertainty as a result of the Trump administration’s whiplash trade policies already at a high.
“Michiganders have already rejected Mike Rogers and his record… No Republican has won a Michigan Senate race for more than three decades and Democrats will hold this seat in 2026,” Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesperson Maeve Coyle said in a statement.
On the Democratic side, state Sen. Mallory McMorrow announced her campaign for Senate earlier this month. Possible other candidates include the state’s Attorney General Dana Nessel and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, meanwhile, has ruled out a run.
