FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was clearly delighted with his team after it thrashed bitter rival Real Madrid 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.

Few would have thought that a team which blew a six point lead in La Liga to now trail Atletico Madrid by the same margin was capable of mounting a historic comeback for the ages when Kylian Mbappe scored within five minutes for the defending champion.

After Lamine Yamal replied by slotting an excellently-placed shot past Thibaut Courtois at the end of a slalom run on 22 minutes, however, Barca then scored four more to once more win El Clasico by a wide margin as it had done through a 4-0 pummelling of Ancelotti’s men in the Bernabeu at the end of October.

While the Italian slammed his team for “not playing football” in the first half, Flick felt that the Catalans “played a great game”.

“Today is a day to be positive and optimistic. The team is amazing, I can only congratulate it. We always stuck together. We defended and attacked together – this is the important thing,” Flick added.

“That was the key. The objective is to learn from each game and improve day by day,” the German also said, revealing that he likes “to have a team that plays a specific style”.

“It’s important how we played. Today we made some mistakes and that is what we must reduce. When we have the ball everything is easier”.

Flick noted that it is “not easy to play with 10 men against Real Madrid” after Wojciech Szczesny was sent off. Thankfully for him though, he has “two fantastic goalkeepers” and his side “defended as a team”.

“I’ve been in this world for many years. The goal of the big clubs is to win titles and that’s why we work hard. Now we must show, in every game, how good we are,” Flick demanded.

“I’m proud of the players. For all the staff, for the fans, it was good for us to come back after Mbappe’s goal. We did things well and it was incredible.”

To conclude, Flick thanked his staff “because we debated the changes that had to be made after Szczesny’s expulsion and they went well.”
