Those planning something special for Valentine’s Day weekend may also want to prepare for highway restrictions and traffic along some of Phoenix’s busiest freeways.
Interstate 10 won’t close entirely this weekend, but lane restrictions will happen in some areas.
Major freeway closures for Feb. 14-17 are set for Interstate 17 and State Route 143 North.
The Arizona Department of Transportation urged motorists to allow for extra travel time and driving on the primary detours.
For real-time highway conditions, drivers should check az511.gov, the az511 app or call 511.
Here are the freeway closures for this weekend (Feb. 14-17).
Southbound I-17 closed between Loop 303 and Happy Valley Road
The closure will last from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvement. Southbound I-17 on-ramps at State Route 74/Carefree Highway and Dove Valley Road will also close.
Detour: Southbound I-17 traffic will exit to westbound Loop 303 and use southbound Lake Pleasant Parkway to eastbound Happy Valley Road to return to I-17. Some streets will close, allowing only local traffic.
ADOT emphasized using the detour and not local streets that are unequipped to handle highway traffic.
Westbound I-10 narrowed to 2 lanes in areas
ADOT said restrictions on I-10 will occur between Elliot Road and 24th Street near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The lane restrictions will last from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for work on the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.
Westbound I-10 traffic will use the new local lanes between Baseline Road and 40th Street.
Westbound U.S. 60 will narrow to one lane between Rural Road and I-10. Drivers can use the westbound U.S. 60 ramp that connects with the westbound I-10 local lanes.
While the freeway will stay open, closures will happen for some on- and off-ramps. Westbound I-10 on-ramps at Baseline and Broadway roads will close.
All I-10 on- and off-ramps at 32nd Street will close from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for signal work, and 32nd Street will close in both directions near I-10.
ADOT recommends using 40th Street to get around the 32nd Street closure. No detour was provided to avoid the I-10 lane restrictions.
Northbound State Route 143 closed between I-10 and Loop 202
The closure of State Route 143 near Sky Harbor will occur 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for pavement marking and lane shifts as part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. Northbound 48th Street will close between Broadway Road and I-10.
Some ramp closures and other restrictions will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, ADOT noted.
Detour: Alternate routes include westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 202 to reach southbound State Route 143.
