It has been a very good TV season for the new scripted primetime series on broadcast television.

Historically, the freshman series renewal rate is generally in the vicinity of 20 percent each broadcast season. This season to-date, the confirmed returnees have been fast and furious. And now there is another new series greenlit for 2005-26: Fox medical drama Doc.

Debuting on January 7, Doc follows Dr. Amy Larsen (Molly Parker), the chief of internal medicine at fictional Westside Hospital in Minneapolis, after she suffers a traumatic brain injury in a car accident that causes her to lose her memory of the last eight years.

The order is for 22 new episodes of Doc, which is an anomaly on the streaming services.

Doc joins the previously announced renewals for ABC drama High Potential, CBS’ Matlock, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and the reboot of Hollywood Squares, and NBC comedies St. Denis Medical and Happy’s Place. Excluding The CW (which is now the home of predominantly acquired international series), that’s seven new broadcast series confirmed to return in 2025-26, which already surpasses that 20 percent approximation. And that does not include a sure-to-be renewed freshman entry like Tim Allen ABC sitcom Shifting Gears.

The added bonus, meanwhile, is Kathy Bates in the Matlock reboot, who is a likely candidate for an Emmy Award nomination, and The Office-like St. Denis Medical, which has the critics buzzing at a time when streaming owns the bragging rights.

“We’re ecstatic Doc has been picked up for a second season – a testament to the exceptional writing, captivating performances from our talented cast, and the incredible reception from audiences,” said Katherine Pope, President, Sony Pictures Television Studios in a statement. “We’re so grateful to our partners at Fox for their unwavering support as we continue making more episodes of this show!”

Traditionally, the broadcast networks announce their primetime programming plans for the next season the second week in May. And they will do so on an unexpected wave of momentum.
