Disturbed likely had no idea how big their cover of “The Sound of Silence” was going to turn out to be when they released it. The hard rockers put their own spin on the Simon & Garfunkel classic and dropped the reworked cut onto the world in 2015. In the near-decade since then, the title has gone on to become perhaps the group’s biggest hit, and it’s still hugely popular to this day. So popular, in fact, that the song conquers almost every Billboard chart it appears on at the moment.
“The Sound of Silence”—the original version by Disturbed, that is—is present on four different rankings in the U.S. this week. It dominates all but one of them, and its performance on that fourth roster is still noteworthy.
Perhaps most importantly, Disturbed collects a new No. 1 with “The Sound of Silence” this week. The track jumps from No. 7 to first place on Billboard’s Alternative Digital Song Sales chart. Almost 400 frames into its tenure on that ranking of the bestselling cuts in the nation, the cover has finally reached the throne.
Disturbed earns their first No. 1 ever on the Alternative Digital Song Sales list as “The Sound of Silence” climbs. They’ve sent 10 tracks to the ranking, and half a dozen of them have cracked the top 10, and now, finally, they’ve reached the summit.
“The Sound of Silence” is also in charge of two other very closely related charts. Disturbed returns to the peak position on both the Rock Digital Song Sales and Hard Rock Digital Song Sales rankings.
Disturbed’s cover was so popular in the U.S. last week, it even finds its way back to the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart. On that tally, which is often considered one of the more important and certainly more competitive, “The Sound of Silence” is a top 10 win, as it returns to the roster in tenth place.
Luminate reports that “The Sound of Silence” sold a little less than 3,600 copies in America just last tracking period. That sum is up dramatically from the frame prior, when it didn’t even muster 1,000 purchases. Disturbed’s tune experienced a 463% rise in sales in only a matter of days.
As the hard rock version of “The Sound of Silence” performs well, so, too, does the dance take. The Cyril remix of Disturbed’s cut, which became a hit in its own right, is also on the up-and-up. On Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart, the tune pushes one rung to settle in the runner-up space, nearly recapturing the top spot.
