Cobra Kai
Cobra Kai, one of Netflix’s surprise hits after it purchased it from YouTube, has now come to an end after six seasons. But how many people actually made it to the end of the series remains to be seen. The final episodes of Cobra Kai have now been knocked off Netflix’s top 10 list in the US after just a day or two there, replaced by a new season of Love is Blind, season 8, specifically.
I’m not sure if this is necessarily a lack of interest in how Cobra Kai ends, or a result of the bizarre decision for Netflix to split this final 15 episode season up into three different chunks airing months apart. Though you may also be able to make the case that it just went on a bit too long. Six seasons and 65 episodes is a lot for this rival dojo concept based on a handful of movies that aren’t even a single season’s length, when added together.
Top 10
It doesn’t really matter, of course, as season 6 of Cobra Kai is not looking for a season 7 renewal, given that this is the season finale. There is some controversy about the ending as (spoilers) it features a deepfaked Pat Morita, the deceased actor who played the sensei in the original films, a now too-common practice in movies (see Alien Romulus, most recently, or what Star Wars has been doing with its dead and not dead actors).
As for Love is Blind, its debut on top here is no great surprise. This is far and away Netflix’s most popular reality show, and it has become its de facto Bachelor/Bachelorette, though likely with more viewers than those series now, given Netflix’s reach. The show is split between two people finding love without seeing each other, then getting married, or breaking up, at a rapid clip, and the show has already created a few famous reality couples as a result. And many viral moments. Love is Blind will be renewed forever, that much is clear.
After a very impressive run, The Åre Murders is finally slipping down the list, and even if it did not reach #1, it still did very well in the context of being a little-known Scandinavian mystery. The new season of Sweet Magnolias dropped pretty fast, and I’m curious if that means anything for its future prospects. The show I’m currently watching is Cassandra, the bizarre German series about a retro AI robot that ends up being, surprise, pretty murderous. It’s good so far.
It’s possible that Cobra Kai ends up back at #1 if Love is Blind is watched immediately then falls off. That show, like most reality shows on Netflix, is released in chunks, so it will be on the list for a while.
