Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is due to meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday for talks on the war in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected to hold talks with the visitor from Beijing.

“We expect President Putin to receive Mr Wang Yi and for them to exchange views,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to the TASS state news agency.

The talks will focus on “prospects for a resolution of the Ukraine crisis,” as well as other international issues, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Bilateral issues were also on the agenda.

China is a close ally of Russia but has been critical of the significant international upheaval caused by Russia’s war on Ukraine.

A peace plan proposed by Beijing’s leadership was rejected by Ukraine because it closely aligned with Russian positions. Should the United Nations play a role in resolving the conflict, China – as a veto power in the Security Council – would be involved.
