Chhaava
Chhaava features Rashmika Mandanna, Ashutosh Rana, Vineet Kumar Singh and Akshaye Khanna in important roles. Maddock Films have produced the film which is directed by Utekar (previously worked on Mimi). The film tells the tales of bravery and patriotism that Indian warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s son, Sambhaji Maharaj displayed during the times of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb in India.
Akshaye Khanna plays the antagonist’s role Aurangzeb while Rashmika Mandanna is Kaushal’s onscreen wife, Yesubhai Bhonsle. Ashutosh Rana plays Hambir Rao while Vineet Kumar Singh delivers one of his career-best performance in the film as poet Kalash. Shivaji Sawant’s book Chhava has been adapted onscreen as the film Chhaava which features music by Oscar-winning musician AR Rahman.
Chhaava: Box office competition
After Chhaava hit theatres, Bollywood has seen a few significant films in theatres. Mere Husband Ki Biwi featuring Arjun Kapoor released on February 21 and saw a dismal run at the box office. Directed by Mudassar Aziz (Happy Bhag Jayegi, Khel Khel Mein), the movie also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Rakul Preet Singh.
Sohum Shah’s Crazxy and Zoya Akhtar’s Superboys of Malegaon also released in theatres on February 28, and both have limited screens across India. Directed by Reema Kagti (Dahaad), Superboys of Malegaon stars Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, Shashank Arora and Anuj Singh Duhan in important roles. Crazxy focuses on one character, essayed by Shah himself who has produced the film as well. It scored nearly $2 million in three weeks. Both films have received critical acclaim and have also had decent box office run but did not churn out numbers big enough to compete with Chhaava. Their scale of release also make it impossible for them to compete.
The latest Hindi release, The Diplomat, has shown an upward trend, making space for some competition for Chhaava at the box office. Headlined by John Abraham, the new movie has scored nearly $1 million in its opening weekend, offering a decent battle for the war saga. However, none of these films boast of a scale that can offer tough competition to Chhaava. The film is likely to exploit its complete box office run before slowing down and landing a digital release.
