Tidewater Pipes & Drums will host a free Tartan Day event Sunday at Murphy’s Irish Pub, located at 2914 Pacific Ave. at the Oceanfront.
Tartan Day is a North American celebration of Scottish heritage. Held annually on April 6, the date signifies the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, which was signed in 1320.
The celebration starts at 2 p.m. on the pub’s outdoor stage with a performance by Norfolk band Scotch ‘n’ Rye performing a mix of rock and Americana with a hint of Celtic.
At 3 p.m., a short ceremony will feature a performance by Tidewater Pipes & Drums with members of Greater Richmond Pipes & Drums, Newport News Police Pipes & Drums, Southeastern Virginia Firefighters Pipes & Drums and Williamsburg Pipes & Drums.
Members of the Scottish Society of Tidewater will also be participating to promote the preservation and study of Scottish culture.
