ADRIAN — Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of a fire that damaged a group of buildings Saturday evening in downtown Adrian.
Adrian firefighters were assisted by crews from 14 fire departments in battling the blaze that significantly damaged the buildings at 117, 119, 121 and 123 W. Maumee St., a news release from the city of Adrian said. The building at 115 W. Maumee St. also sustained smoke damage.
No residents or firefighters were injured, the release said. The building at 123 W. Maumee had six apartments in it with five of them being occupied, Adrian Mayor Angie Sword Heath said Saturday night. Businesses in the buildings include Diamond Jim’s Pool Hall, the Adrian Dance Center and Hilltop Counseling. The Friends Communications radio stations, including WABJ and Q95 Country, used to be in 121 W. Maumee St., but they relocated several years ago to the WLEN building at 242 W. Maumee St.

Diamond Jim’s said in a Facebook post that it is closed until further notice and all of the Southern Michigan APA pool leagues are on hold for at least a week.
Hilltop Counseling is working out of Parkside Nextdoor at 112 S. McKenzie St. in Adrian, they said in a Facebook post.
“Our office has suffered only minor damage from ensuring the building was clear and smells a little smoky,” Hilltop said in another post. “We may be without power and gas for a day or two.”

“We are thankful that no one was harmed despite the size and difficulty containing this fire,” the post said. “However, some people have lost housing and some small family businesses have been significantly impacted. Please keep our neighbors in mind in the days ahead.”

The assistance to the Adrian Fire Department came from 11 departments in Lenawee County — Addison, Adrian Township, Blissfield Township, Deerfield, Morenci, Madison Township, Palmyra Township, Raisin Township, Ridgeway Township, Sand Lake and Tecumseh — as well as crews from Bedford Township in Monroe County, Manchester in Washtenaw County and the Lyons-Royalton Fire Department in Ohio. The Adrian police and public works departments also assisted, and the Salvation Army’s canteen provided food and beverages to the first responders.
Firefighters remained on the scene putting out hotspots until about 11 a.m. Sunday, Adrian Fire Chief Aric Massingill said in a text message Monday.
Investigators have not yet determined a cause or origin of the fire, Massingill said.
