The U.S. National Anthem was subject to boos during an NHL game in the Canadian capital of Ottawa on Saturday evening.

In the build-up to a match between the Ottawa Senators and Minnesota Wild, Canadian artist Mandia performed the “Oh Canada” national anthem before delivering her rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.”

However, the U.S. national anthem was met with a chorus of boos.

Watch the clip below:

The boos are almost certainly the result of Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on exports from Canada and Mexico until both countries agree to secure their borders and stop the flow of fentanyl that continues to destroy millions of lives.

In a post on Truth Social on Saturday evening, Trump said the decision was about protecting the safety of Americans:

Today, I have implemented a 25% Tariff on Imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian Energy), and a 10% additional Tariff on China.

This was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl.

We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all.

I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it.

Trump has long held the view that tariffs are the answer to countries refusing to cooperate with America.

However, they are still widely understood to be a negotiating tactic in order to make countries such as Mexico and Canada more receptive to Washington’s demands.

On Saturday evening, outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “perplexed” as to why Trump had taken this course of action.

“I think Canadians are a little perplexed as to why our closest friends and neighbors are choosing to target us,” Trudeau whined at a press conference.

“I don’t think there are a lot of Americans who wake up in the morning saying, “Oh, damn Canada. Oh, we should really go after Canada.”

Canadians may feel unhappy or even offended, but if that is the price the U.S. must pay to protect its national security then the majority of Americas will agree that the tariffs are absolutely necessary.
