Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ single “Die with a Smile” has been running the show on Billboard’s global charts for well over a month. The collaboration has now ruled the rankings for seven weeks, and the tune shows no signs of slowing down. While the track may be the biggest in the world, it still has yet to hit No. 1 on several of the most important song tallies in the largest markets (including America)—but it’s getting closer.
“Die with a Smile” is on the rise in the U.K., on what is considered one of the most competitive songs charts globally. On the main songs list, which ranks the most popular tracks in terms of total consumption—using a methodology that includes both sales and streaming data—the joint single rises to No. 3, up one rung from last time around.
No. 3 now stands as the all-time high point for “Die with a Smile” in the United Kingdom. The single has been performing very well for eight weeks now, and it’s only getting bigger. But can it climb to No. 1?
At the moment, the only two tracks that are beating “Die with a Smile” are Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste” (No. 1) and Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” (No. 2). The former has now ruled the ranking for all seven weeks it’s been present on the tally. That may be a sign that the cut is ready to fall soon, as the public may grow tired of it, or perhaps that it will go on to become a historic ruler.
Roan’s breakout single, meanwhile, is also vying for its first frame on top. “Good Luck, Babe!,” which is easily one of the biggest hits in the world this year, has thus far peaked at No. 2, where it remains after holding in that slot last time around as well. After more than half a year on the chart, it’s not clear if the smash has what it takes to continue the climb, but it’s certainly possible.
Both Gaga and Mars have reached No. 1 on the U.K. songs chart in the past, though it’s been a few years since either of them dominated. Mars has accrued five winners, while Gaga claims one more.
For Mars, it’s been a decade since he last controlled the list. He joined Mark Ronson on the unstoppable “Uptown Funk,” which topped the tally in 2014. Gaga most recently appeared at No. 1 in 2020, with “Rain on Me,” which also featured Ariana Grande.
At the moment, “Die with a Smile” is still present inside the top 10 on all five charts it appears on across the pond. It ranks lowest on the Official Physical Singles list, where it comes in at No. 9. Otherwise, the cut is living within the top five on both sales and streaming rankings, which is a good sign for its future.
