Representative Elise Stefanik, a key Trump ally, has officially launched her campaign for Governor of New York. Her goal is to challenge current Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the 2026 elections.

Stefanik, known for her loyalty to President Trump, visited Albany on June 9, 2025, and criticized Hochul as the “worst governor in America,” according to The New York Times. She promised executive orders on “day one” to address immigration and review state spending.

Hochul, in power since 2021, faces criticism over her handling of security and the economy, opening a window of opportunity for Republicans. She narrowly won reelection in 2022 against Lee Zeldin, with 53.12% to his 46.73%.

Zeldin, former congressman and 2022 Republican nominee, lost but set a precedent by narrowing the Democratic margin. He now serves as EPA Administrator under Trump.

Republican strategists view New York as fertile ground for 2026, with competitive districts and potential weakness from Hochul, highlighting a focus on targeting Democratic figures.

Stefanik’s campaign could reshape state politics if she capitalizes on voter dissatisfaction. Her platform includes policies aligned with the Trump administration.

Elise Stefanik, born in Albany and a Harvard graduate, was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress in 2014. She represents New York’s 21st district and currently serves as Chair of the House Republican Conference.

Initially a moderate, she became a staunch Trump ally following the 2019 impeachment trial. She defended his presidency, objected to the 2020 election results, and ousted Liz Cheney from Republican leadership.

In her gubernatorial campaign, she proposes “day one” executive orders to halt illegal immigration, cut taxes, eliminate congestion pricing, and promote fracking in upstate New York. She also pledges to combat antisemitism and reverse bail reform policies that have led to increased crime.

With conservative backing and her new PAC “Save New York,” Stefanik seeks to tap into discontent with Hochul and take the fight to a Democratic stronghold in 2026.
