Law enforcement urged people to stay away from the vicinity of East 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue on Monday evening amid reports of an active shooter wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a semiautomatic rifle.

An NYPD officer is reportedly among the victims, but their identity and condition are unclear.

According to early reports on social media, the NYPD requested a “Level 3 Mobilization Response.”

Photos posted to social media showed officers with guns drawn entering the building at 345 Park Avenue. Pix 11 reports, “Multiple people were reportedly shot on the 32nd floor of the building, police say.”

Fox 5 reports:

A very heavy police presence was observed near 51st Street and Park Avenue. Witnesses, including a FOX 5 NY employee, reported hearing gunshots.

NYPD and Sheriff’s Department officers in protective gear were seen with guns drawn.

Video taken by a FOX 5 NY employee shows several officers carrying a person, and other officers appear to be tending to a person lying on the ground.

“Due to police activity, please avoid the vicinity of East 52 Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Expect emergency vehicles & delays in the surrounding area,” the NYPD wrote in a post on X as the situation unfolded.

Details about the number of victims, the target, the motive, or the suspect have not been publicly released at this time.

New York has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.
