Timothée Chalamet in “A Complete Unknown.”
The Best Picture Oscar nominee A Complete Unknown — starring Timothée Chalamet in his Oscar-nominated performance as Bob Dylan — is coming to Hulu this week.
Director James Mangold’s film about the legendary singer, musician and songwriter was released in theaters on Dec. 25, 2024. The official logline for A Complete Unknown reads, “In 1961, an unknown 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York City with his guitar and forges relationships with musical icons on his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking performance that reverberates around the world.”
In addition to the film’s Best Picture and Best Actor nominations, A Complete Unknown was nominated for six other Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Edward Norton for playing Pete Seeger and Monica Barbaro for playing Joan Baez.
Mangold was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay along with co-writer Jay Cocks. The film, however, was shut out at the 97th Academy Awards.
A Complete Unknown also stars Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash and Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, who is based on Suze Rotolo, Dylan’s real-life girlfriend in the 1960s.
Per Hulu’s announcement earlier this month, A Complete Unknown will debut on streaming on Hulu on Thursday, March 27.
Only Hulu subscribers can watch the film on the platform. Hulu has an ad-based package for $9.99 per month or an ad-free package for $18.99 per month.
Timothée Chalamet Took Five Years To Prepare To Play Bob Dylan In ‘A Compete Unknown’
During a small press event in Bob Dylan’s home state of Minnesota on Dec. 5, 2024, Timothée Chalamet said his quest of becoming the legendary troubadour for A Complete Unknown took an immense amount of prep time.
“The lead up to it was five years of practicing and messing up,” Chalamet said.
Chalamet said he was confident the hard work paid off. “I don’t want to sound over-confident but [I felt I captured that essence] with every song because I lived with him for so long,” Chalamet said. “I feel like I could be out of bounds answering that question because [I was thinking], ‘Is this going to feel like Bob to an audience?’ [But] it really just felt impactful to me when I was doing it.”
Audiences, critics and awards bodies were convinced of Chalamet’s performance as Dylan. Per The Numbers, A Complete Unknown has earned $74.8 million domestically and $57.2 million for a worldwide box office gross of $132 million.
In addition, Rotten Tomatoes critics gave A Complete Unknown an 82% “fresh” rating based on 331 reviews and audiences awarded the film with a 95% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 5,000-plus verified user ratings.
Chalamet was a fixture on the awards season circuit, with his biggest win coming in the Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Chalamet also earned Best Actor nominations from the Golden Globes (Drama), Critics Choice Awards and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards.
Rated R, the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown begins streaming on Hulu on Thursday.
