The current Billboard charts reflect music consumption during the week that included Christmas, so this is the biggest frame of the season for those timely tunes. Next week, it’s likely that many, if not all, yuletide cuts and albums will fall from their current positions, and most may disappear entirely…at least until next winter begins. For the moment, though, all other tracks that don’t relate to snow, Santa, presents, and the like are forced to take a backseat.
The most popular holiday hit at present is “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey. That’s not surprising, as it has ranked as the top-consumed holiday smash for years, and it rises to the peak on a number of charts every season. The single bounds back to No. 1 on Billboard’s global lists after being held back from the throne for weeks by one of the biggest smashes of 2024, though not even that tune could compete with the modern classic this time around.
As “All I Want for Christmas Is You” hits No. 1, Carey’s single replaces “Apt.” by Rosé and Bruno Mars atop both of Billboard’s worldwide rankings. That single had been enjoying a historically-long tenure on top, but that run is over…at least for the time being.
This week is the first in which “Apt.” doesn’t lead the Billboard Global 200 and the Billboard Global Excl. US. The collaboration between Mars and the Blackpink singer debuted at No. 1 months ago, and it ended up ruling the two tallies for nine consecutive frames.
With nine weeks spent at No. 1, “Apt.” ranks as one of the most successful songs of all time on the two global lists, which were introduced by Billboard in 2020. Rosé and Mars matched several superstars and beloved smashes with its lengthy reign, even tying as the song with the second-most frames in a row on top…though now any hopes of extending that record are over.
“Apt.” only slips three rungs on the Billboard Global Excl. US, as it settles at No. 3. Both “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and Wham!’s “Last Christmas” push past the popular duet. On the Billboard Global 200, Rosé and Mars tumble from first place to fifth, with those two holiday cuts, as well as both Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (No. 3) and Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” (No. 4) beating it as well.
Next week, there’s a good chance that “Apt.” will return to No. 1 on one, if not both worldwide charts. If it does manage to climb again, it will become one of a very small number of songs to rule for double-digit frames, and where it goes from there is anybody’s guess.
