A New York man wanted for a double murder in Binghamton, N.Y. was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Daytona Beach, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said.
“UPDATE: Double murder suspect Scott Mitchell is in custody in Daytona Beach. The person who called in the tip just earned $10,000,” the sheriff’s office posted on its Facebook page shortly before 2 p.m.
On Tuesday the sheriff’s office announced that they were looking for Mitchell, 50, believed to be in the west DeLand area.
Earlier Wednesday the sheriff’s office said it was working with the Binghamton Police Department in offering a reward to locate Mitchell.
“We are teaming up with the Binghamton Police Department to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Scott Mitchell, wanted for 2 counts of second-degree murder. Call 911 if seen,” the social media post stated.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, law enforcement officials said they had located a backpack with blood on it belonging to Mitchell in the Daytona Beach area.
Bodies found in Binghamton on Feb. 5
News reports in New York say Binghamton police were looking for Mitchell in connection with the killings of Daniel McCloe, 58, and Marshall VanOven, 55, on Feb. 3.
According to media reports, McCloe and VanOven were reported missing Feb. 3 and their bodies were found at a private residence on the west side of Binghamton on Feb. 5.
Binghamton is about 140 miles southwest of Albany.
Mitchell and the victims were believed to be friends, according to authorities in New York.
