Bessent Warns ‘Economic D-Day’ Awaits Recalcitrant Iran

“The single greatest financial offensive ever” awaits Iran as the U.S.-Israel war with the totalitarian Islamic regime enters its “endgame,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Monday.

Bessent further cautioned the U.S. would sever all economic ties with the country in “an economic D-Day” and any nation partnering with Iran financially would also be isolated, he so described in an opinion piece for the Financial Times newspaper published out of London.

“The world should understand that our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” Bessent wrote in the piece.

Exactly what the economic pressure on Iran would involve is yet to be made clear, but Bessent is expected to do so in a press conference in the U.S. at 13:00 local time (18:00 BST) on Monday.

The BBC reports Iran waved away Bessent’s comments and said it would not be cowed while shutting down all oil exports from the region “if the war continues,” according to news agency Reuters.

Mohsen Rezaei, the hard-line leader of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said in a post on X any country’s support for new American economic measures would be seen as an “act of war.”

The Iranian regime has also issued a new warning to shipping not to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without its permission, the agency reported.

One fifth of the world’s oil and gas usually passes through troubled strait, a waterway south of Iran, but the flow has been effectively blocked by the Islamic regime since the conflict began at the end of February.

Iran’s currency hit a record low Monday on the back of Bessent’s threat of new sanctions, adding further pressure on an economy already battered by previous sanctions and a U.S. naval blockade.
