ABC News Studios documentary, “Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything,” premieres on Hulu Monday, June … More
Barbara Walters forged a path for women in journalism. She became the first woman to co-anchor a national news show on primetime television in 1976. She pioneered long-form interviews, blending news and entertainment. She appeared on NBC’s Today show, ABC newsmagazine 20/20, and created ABC morning talk show The View, which was designed as a daily arena for timely and often controversial issues. And we celebrate the life of Barbara Walters, who died at age 93 in 2022, in the ABC News Studios documentary, Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything. It premieres on Hulu on Monday, June 23 and will be available later this year on Disney+ following its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival.
Produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries and directed by Jackie Jesko (Vice), Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything features unaired footage from ABC’s archives and interviews with people who knew and worked with Walters, including Cindy Adams, Joy Behar, Connie Chung, Martin Clancy, Andy Cohen, Katie Couric, Peter Gethers, Lori Klein, Cynthia McFadden, Bette Midler, Victor Neufeld, David Sloan, Katie Nelson Thomson, Chris Vlasto and Oprah Winfrey.
“ABC News broke new ground by hiring Barbara and putting a woman at the anchor desk which was the exclusive preserve of men,” said David Sloan, senior executive producer, ABC News in a statement. “Her road was filled with peril and naysayers and navigating that was not without personal costs. Nevertheless, Barbara created a dazzling career that had no blueprint and changed broadcast journalism forever.”
“Barbara Walters was a true trailblazer. She not only changed the face of broadcast journalism and set the gold standard, but she completely transformed the culture’s consumption of celebrity journalism, and in the process, inspired generations with her determination, brilliance and humanity,” noted Sara Bernstein, president of Imagine Documentaries. “It’s been a true privilege to collaborate with Jackie Jesko, Betsy West and the exceptional team at ABC News Studios. We can’t wait to shine a light on Barbara’s iconic story with the Hulu audience.”
In a career that spanned five decades, Barbara Walters won 12 Emmy awards, 11 of those while at ABC News. She was also inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1989 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.
Over the years, Walters accumulated an extensive list of interviews including Katharine Hepburn, Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, John Wayne, Henry Kissinger, Fidel Castro, Lucille Ball, Barbra Streisand, Fred Astaire, Michael Jackson, Sir Laurence Olivier, Bing Crosby, Bette Davis, Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Justin Bieber, and the controversial presidential intern Monica Lewinsky.
“My hope for the film is that audiences feel they get to know the real Barbara, in all her complexities — her private struggles and her public triumphs,” said Jackie Jesko. “Barbara stayed a television fixture for five decades, battling rampant sexism, fierce competition, and a constantly evolving media landscape. In today’s world, where celebrities and politicians can choose to speak out on their own social media platforms instead of subjecting themselves to a news interviewer, Barbara’s story gives us the opportunity to explore the changing relationship between journalism, fame, and truth.”
