Poland has activated border controls at dozens of crossing points with Germany and Lithuania, apparently after being embarrassed by citizen vigilantes taking on border defence roles themselves where they said the government had failed. Polish border guard teams, reinforced by local police and soldiers, stood post at 52 crossing points along the German border and a further 13 with Lithuania in the early hours of Monday morning amid the enactment of temporary border controls. The controls are due to last 30 days, but the Polish government hasn’t ruled out extending them. The checks come amid a growing disagreement between Berlin…
Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) said Saturday on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” that President Donald Trump was implementing mass deportation in an attempt to “bleach America.” Wasserman Schultz said, “Again, more Trump lies, more people being thrown into a dire situation where many of them will ultimately die when they’re deported back to countries like Venezuela and Haiti, which clearly don’t have conditions in which it is safe or a place that has the environment to take people back. In Haiti, that is a country that is overrun by gangs and essentially is a failed state, and in Venezuela, you have…
A few weeks ago, my POLITICO colleague Nicholas Wu and NBC’s Sahil Kapur ran into D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton in the Capitol. Like good congressional reporters, they jumped at the opportunity to pepper a lawmaker about the news of the day. In this case, one question concerned Norton herself, a civil rights icon who is now the oldest House member: Would she run for another term next year, by which point she would be 89 years old? “Yeah, sure,” Norton said. Coming on the heels of multiple stories about Norton’s alleged cognitive decline, the statement made news. But a…

The Irish government is reportedly set to reject demands from the European Union to implement hate speech legislation after Dublin abandoned plans to do so last year. In September of last year, the Irish government scrapped plans to criminalise so-called hate speech in its Criminal Justice Bill, which would have allowed the state to send someone to prison for up to five years for “incitement to hatred against persons on account of their protected characteristics”. The move to abandon the controversial section of the bill came as Justice Minister Helen McEntee admitted that it did “not have a consensus” among…
ECAULT BEACH, France (AP) – Across the English Channel, the U.K.’s white cliffs beckon. On fine days, men and women with children in their arms and determination in their eyes can see the shoreline of what they believe will be a promised land as they attempt the perilous crossing clandestinely, ditching belongings to squeeze aboard flimsy inflatable boats that set to sea from northern France. In a flash, on one recent crossing attempt, French police swooped in with knives, wading into the water and slashing the boat’s thin rubber – literally deflating the migrants’ hopes and dreams. Some of the…
