President de Gaulle of France initiated the secret operation “Vide-Gousset” and repatriated 3,313 tonnes of gold reserves from the vaults of the Federal Reserve in New York and the Bank of England in London from 1963 until 1966. De Gaulle feared America’s deficit in its balance of payments would rupture Bretton Woods and lead to a devaluation of the dollar against gold. All France’s dollars were converted into gold and to avoid treachery the metal was repatriated over the course of three years. It took 44 boat trips and 129 flights to bring home more than three thousand tonnes of…

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes announced over the weekend that the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) paid its fines to the wrong state bank account and as a result, its services in Brazil will remain suspended until the matter is solved. De Moraes banned access to X in Brazil in late August after the social media platform refused to comply with censorship orders and appoint a new legal representative in Brazil. The ban on X in Brazil came after a months-long feud between the Brazilian judge — a self-styled “anti-fake news crusader” with an extensive…

A Russian court on Monday sentenced 72-year-old U.S. citizen Stephen James Hubbard to nearly seven years in prison for helping to defend Ukraine against the Russian invasion. Russian prosecutors said Hubbard joined a defense unit in the eastern Ukrainian city of Izyum immediately after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. He was taken prisoner by Russian forces after the city was captured in April 2022. Ukrainian forces were able to push the Russians out of Izyum in a counteroffensive about five months later.  The prosecution said he “systematically received material compensation” for his efforts, working out to about $1,000 per…

Billionaire Mark Cuban, a top economic surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris, found himself triggered after Breitbart News pressed him on tariffs and America First economic policies. A user on X asked Cuban to provide the “single biggest reason” he is supporting Vice President Kamala Harris and the biggest reason he is not supporting former President Donald Trump. Cuban, bizarrely, pointed to Harris’s economic policies, asserting that she has “great policies for Small Business & Entrepreneurs, the biggest drivers of jobs and growth”: Concerning Trump, Cuban accused him of attempting to overturn the last election. That prompted another X user…

Former President Trump won Pennsylvania in 2016 and we’re told he barely lost Pennsylvania in 2020. Nevertheless, compared to where his polling stood in that vital swing state during those two campaigns, he is way over-performing in the polling today. According to the RealClearPolitics (RCP) average poll of Pennsylvania state polls, Trump leads sitting Vice President Kamala Harris by a mere 0.2 points. That might not sound like much of a lead — and it’s not, but what’s useful is to look at the polling in Pennsylvania at this same time in the 2016 and 2020 campaigns. According to the…

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell lambasted a proposal from Vice President Kamala Harris that would eliminate the filibuster to pass abortion rights legislation — warning Democrats that they will rue the move when Republicans next control Washington. “What they want to do is break the institution in order to achieve what they want to achieve,” he said in an interview Thursday. McConnell spoke two days after Harris told Wisconsin Public Radio that “we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe” — in other words, changing the Senate’s rules to exempt a vote to restore the abortion rights guarantee under Roe v.…

Democratic operatives, including some of Kamala Harris’ own staffers, are growing increasingly concerned about her relatively light campaign schedule, which has her holding fewer events than Donald Trump and avoiding unscripted interactions with voters and the press almost entirely. In interviews with POLITICO, nearly two dozen Democrats described Harris as running a do-no-harm, risk-averse approach to the race they fear could hamper her as the campaign enters its final 30-day stretch. With early voting by mail and in person already underway in more than half of the country, Harris spent just three days of the last week of September in…
