Disney Enterprises, Inc.Moana 2 — Disney’s animated blockbuster starring the voices of Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson— arrives on streaming on Disney+ this week.
Rated PG, Moana 2 — the sequel to the 2016 animated smash Moana — was released in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024. The logline for the film reads, “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
In addition to Cravahlo and Johnson as the voices of Moana and Maui, the voice cast for Moana 2 includes Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Hualalai Chung, Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, David Fane, Rose Matafeo, Rachel House and Alan Tudyk.
Disney+ recently announced in a YouTube video (see below) that Moana 2 was debuting on Disney+ on Tuesday, Wednesday, March 12. Disney+ offers a basic ad-based streaming plan for $9.99 per month, as well as well as an ad-free premium plan is $15.99 per month or $159.99 yearly.
For viewers who don’t subscribe to Disney+, Moana 2 is still playing in theaters and is available on digital streaming via premium video on demand on such platforms as AppleTV, Fandango at Home and Prime Video.
Auli’i Cravahlo Says Moana Continues To Be A Role Model In ‘Moana 2’
In an interview about her work in Moana 2 prior to the film’s release in November of 2024, Auli’i Cravahlo told Parents that she admires how her title character shows courage and takes risks, even though taking risks is a tough thing to do in real life.
“I think I still struggle with taking risks. I think change is really scary no matter how old you get, but I like that Moana is a role model for others, but also for myself,” Cravalho explained to Parents.
“I think that she is so brave and she has such a deep love for her community and her culture. And, yet I think in this film, we see that even she struggles, right? She hits her lows and, in the first film, Moana gave Maui a pep talk,” Cravalho added. “And, in this film, you see that Moana needs a pep talk, too. So having a good community around you is really important for those days, which will inevitably come when you need some help.”
According to The Numbers, Moana 2 to date has earned $459.6 million domestically and $595.3 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $1.055 billion to date against a $150 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.
Rotten Tomatoes critics gave Moana 2 a 61% “fresh” rating based on 233 reviews, while audiences gave the film an 86% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 10,000-plus verified user ratings.
The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Riding high on a wave of stunning animation even when its story runs adrift, Moana 2 isn’t as inspired as the original but still delights as a colorful adventure.”
Directed by David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, Moana 2 arrives on Disney+ on Wednesday.
