The first part of Kevin Costner’s sprawling four-part film franchise, Horizon: An American Saga, quietly premiered on Netflix this week. Although the film performed poorly in theaters, it appears to be resonating with streaming audiences who are discovering Costner’s legacy project for the first time.

Horizon: An American Saga is set in the frontier town of Horizon, located in the San Pedro Valley during the Civil War. The film introduces several characters, including widow Frances Kittredge (played by Sienna Miller), Lt. Gephardt (Sam Worthington), and Matthew Van Weyden (Luke Wilson). Kevin Costner, who also directs, stars as Hayes Ellison, a cowboy on the run with a prostitute and a young boy after killing a fellow gunman.

When Is Horizon: An America Saga – Chapter 2 Coming Out?

Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 is set to debut in 2025, though an exact release date has yet to be announced. The movie, which has already been filmed and edited, premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival in September 2024.

Chapter 2 was initially scheduled for theatrical release on Aug. 2. However, the first film underperformed at the box office, earning only $38 million worldwide, which was less than its $50 million production budget. Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema decided to postpone the release of the second part to allow audiences more time to watch the first film on streaming platforms.

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and MAX,” a New Line rep said in a statement.

Territory Pictures added, “The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying. Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey. The support that we have received from film fans, and the theater owners, as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride.

What Is Horizon: An America Saga – Chapter 2 About?

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 continues the story of the settlement of the American West, exploring the next chapter in the lives of the characters introduced in Part 1. Some critics who viewed the film at the 2024 Venice Film Festival have already shared their opinions on the second part—and the reviews are quite harsh.

Leslie Felperin from The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the second installment has “he same problems as its predecessor: too much setup and not enough payoff; jagged editing that only highlights the lack of harmony between its disparate narrative strands; and cliché-tinged production values that often make it feel corny and old-fashioned, and not in a good way.”

Deadline film critic Stephanie Bunbur penned “nothing adds up” in the second chapter. “There is no structural integrity, no over-arching trajectory, no sense that the various stories weave together to create the saga of the subtitle. There are arbitrary cuts as the stories alternate at random, often with the sense that we have missed some vital information during the in-between bits; it’s that sense of crash-landing in the middle of a scene that you used to have when television stations kept movies running over commercial breaks. Even when single scenes work, they don’t fit together,” she wrote.

Who Is In The Horizon: An America Saga – Chapter 2 Cast?

Costner returns in Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, joined by Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Danny Huston, Jena Malone, Ella Hunt, Will Patton, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Thomas Haden Church, Glynn Turman, and Kathleen Quinlan, all reprising their roles from the first film.
