Black Bag — a critically acclaimed spy thriller starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender from director Stephen Soderbergh — debuts on digital streaming this week.
Rated R, Black Bag opened in theaters on March 14. The official summary for the film reads, “Black Bag is a gripping spy drama about legendary intelligence agents George Woodhouse (Fassbender) and his beloved wife Kathryn (Blanchett). When she is suspected of betraying the nation, George faces the ultimate test – loyalty to his marriage or his country.”
Black Bag also stars Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke and Pierce Brosnan.
Black Bag is listed to be released on Monday at 9 p.m. PT / 12 a.m. ET on Tuesday, per Prime Video. The digital platform has the film listed for pre-order for $24.99, which is also the film’s purchase price.
Since digital rentals are typically $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent Black Bag for a 48-hour period for $19.99.
The film is expected to be available on a variety of other digital platforms besides Prime Video, including Apple TV and Fandango at Home.
Black Bag is making its debut on PVOD a bit quicker than other Focus Features releases. Most PVOD releases from the studio debut three weeks to a month after the film opens in theaters. Black Bag, on the other hand, is arriving on PVOD 18 days after its theatrical released.
How Was ‘Black Bag’ Received By Audiences And Critics?
Black Bag to date has earned $18.7 million in North American ticket sales and $12.4 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $31.1 million against a production budget of $60 million before prints and advertising, per The Numbers.
Despite the weak box office numbers, Black Bag was a huge hit with critics, earning a 96% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 225 reviews.
The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Sleek in design and spiked with dry wit, Black Bag is an exemplary espionage caper that lets movie stars like Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender do what they do best — light up the screen.”
Meanwhile, Black Bag earned a 70% “fresh” rating on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings. The audience summary on RT reads, “[Cate] Blanchett and [Michael]Fassbender excellently set up a play of intrigue in Black Bag, a solid [Steven] Soderbergh entry that if challenging to follow at times, is mostly a satisfying match.
Black Bag is new on digital streaming on Tuesday.
