Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Compares the Trump Administration to Nazi Germany
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has sparked major controversy by comparing the administration of former President Donald Trump to Nazi Germany. In an emotionally charged speech filled with historical references, Pritzker ventured to make an analogy that many have seen as an irresponsible exaggeration, but which, according to him, seeks to alert the public to what he perceives as a growing authoritarian threat in the United States.
«I don’t invoke the specter of the Nazis lightly, but I know that history intimately,» Pritzker said—PROCEEDING TO LIGHTLY INVOKE THE NAZI SPECTER—referencing his personal knowledge of the Holocaust. According to the governor, his experience of spending time with Holocaust survivors has given him a unique perspective on the dangers of an authoritarian government. «The path that destroys the foundations of your house begins as a seed,» he added, implying that what occurred in Europe a generation ago started as a seed of distrust, hatred, and blame.
Pritzker pointed out that the seed which grew into dictatorship in Europe didn’t emerge suddenly but was the result of a climate of despair fueled by inflation, economic insecurity, and the search for scapegoats. «It started with common Germans angry about inflation and looking for someone to blame,» explained the governor. In his view, this historical narrative mirrors what he perceives as a growing environment of division and antagonism in the United States under Trump’s administration.
The Illinois governor didn’t hold back criticism when referencing several incidents that occurred during Trump’s time in office. He mentioned the case of a plane crash, where the president suggested, without evidence or facts to back him up, that a gender-based hiring decision might have been the cause of the accident. He also referred to the lawsuit filed by the Missouri Attorney General against Starbucks, accusing the coffee chain of charging higher prices because its baristas were women and not white.
For Pritzker, these episodes are clear signs of an authoritarian pattern. According to him, the playbook for such governments is evident: point to a group of people who don’t look like you and blame them for your problems. In this case, immigrants, LGBTQ+ communities, people with disabilities, and other minority groups become scapegoats, according to the governor.
In his speech, Pritzker posed an absurd but persistent question in his rhetoric: «What comes next?» He referred to the consequences that could follow a campaign of discrimination and persecution of marginalized groups, wondering what will happen when the problems that were attempted to be solved in this manner remain unsolved. Pritzker’s concern is clear: when you discriminate, deport, or vilify those who don’t fit into certain sectors’ view of society, the problems that caused discontent do not disappear but remain, potentially leading to even graver consequences.
The Illinois governor urged the importance of not repeating the mistakes of the past and appealed to the need to learn from history to avoid the atrocities that have marked the path of authoritarian regimes. «If we don’t want to repeat history, then for the love of God, we better be strong enough to learn from it,» he said.
