TAYLOR — A borough man who fled police when they attempted to stop him for erratic driving admitted he was drinking before getting behind the wheel, according to a criminal complaint.
Marquis Jerome Boyer, 24, of 901 Prince St., is charged with fleeing police officers, driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving.
According to the criminal complaint:
Just after midnight Sunday, officers were on patrol in the 100 block of Union Street when they spotted Boyer’s vehicle with a broken headlight.
When they attempted to stop the vehicle, Boyer fled up Davis Street at a high rate of speed and passed another driver as he drove through a red light at Birney Avenue. Continuing to attempt to elude police, Boyer made a left turn onto Pittston Avenue and then a left turn onto McDonough Avenue.
Boyer hit a curb, which brought his vehicle to a stop, even though he kept trying to accelerate.
He got out of his sedan and aggressively approached the police vehicle.
Officer David Graham drew his Taser and commanded Boyer to stop.
Boyer then reached into his pockets and started throwing things on the ground. He was in possession of a wallet, vapes, lip balm, a phone and rolling papers.
Graham could smell alcohol as he was handcuffing Boyer.
When asked why he fled police, Boyer said he was having a bad day. When asked if he fled because he had been drinking, he said, “that too.”
Boyer admitted to officers he had been drinking and smoking marijuana and just wanted to go home, so he fled, according to the complaint. He told officers he had recently been cited for driving without a license.
Officers took Boyer to the DUI processing center, where he refused a blood draw.
He remains at Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Feb. 27 before District Judge Paul Keeler.
