Red One—Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ Christmas adventure that made a quick debut on Prime Video—has ended its run in theaters. How much money did it earn at the box office?
Red One opened in theaters on Nov. 15. The official logline for the film reads, “After Santa Claus—Code Name: RED ONE—is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas.”
Directed by Jake Kasdan, Red One also stars J.K. Simmons as Santa Claus, Bonnie Hunt as Mrs. Claus and Kristofer Hivju as Krampus. Red One also stars Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka and Mary Elizabeth Ellis.
As indicated by The Numbers’ weekly theater count report on Jan. 9, Red One is done with its theatrical run.
Per The Numbers, Red One’s final day in North American theaters was Thursday, when it earned $7,545 from 285 venues to bring its final domestic tally to $97,000,759.
Combined with the $88,694,091 the film made internationally, Red One’s final worldwide box office gross is $185,694,850 against a $200 million production budget before prints and advertising.
‘Red One’ Found Big Success After Quick Trip To Streaming
An Amazon MGM Studios release, Red One took a different approach when it came to its theatrical release and streaming video on demand release plans.
On Dec. 12, 2024, Red One was released on SVOD for Prime Video subscribers, a mere 27 days after its theatrical release on Nov. 15.
While it’s not unusual for a studio to release a film on digital streaming via premium video on demand in three weeks to a month after its theatrical debut—where it can recoup production costs through purchase and rental fees—Red One skipped that option altogether.
The risky move to go straight to Prime Video paid off Red One, however. According to Deadline, Red One attracted 50 million viewers in its first four days of release on the platform, the most ever for an original Amazon MGM Studios film.
Deadline reported that Red One was originally supposed to be a Prime Video original movie, but Amazon MGM Studios opted for a theatrical run first because of the film’s positive reception at test screenings.
Per The Numbers, Red One remained in 3,150 North American theaters the day it began on SVOD on Prime Video.
For those who missed the film in theaters, Red One is still streaming on Prime Video, where it will remain a regular part of the streaming platform’s film offerings year-round.
