We have been reporting here on TGP about the relationship between billionaire investor Leon Black and late sex offender (and accused sex trafficker) Jeffrey Epstein.
After many years plagued by the association with Epstein, having paid a multi-millionaire sum to settle lawsuits brought by the US Virgin Islands, Black appears to have had enough, and has sued the House Oversight Committee for subpoenaing him to testify in their review.
Leon Black refused to appear for his deposition today.

But now, a new book may rekindle interest in the $158 million relationship between Black and Epstein.
The New York Post reported:
“In “Money to Burn” (Portfolio Books) the writer and former investment banker William D. Cohan tackles this epic tale. […] Leon was introduced to that notorious cultivator of men and abuser of women in 1996, and Epstein would come to serve on the board of Leon’s family foundation. Epstein did not have a great deal of formal schooling but seems to have been an able all-around fixer with a particular talent for the arcane tax issues that afflict the wealthy. Leon Black, as someone making hundreds of millions a year, had such problems, and evidently Epstein was able to help in ways that even well-known experts couldn’t. Epstein also advised on Black’s seemingly disorganized family office.”
“’Money to Burn’ quotes emails in which [Epstein] portrays himself as a loyal but martyred friend from whom Leon withholds millions in well-deserved fees. ‘To help out’, Epstein wrote, ‘[I’m] keenly aware of your current cash position, so I will consider an in-kind payment — real estate (Miami), art, financing of my new plane (allows you to spread over years)’.”
Leon has said he didn’t know how much he paid Epstein over the years. A law firm hired to investigate reported that the total was $158 million.
In 2021, Black resigned from Apollo, but his problems persist.
“The transcribed exchanges between Black and {his lover] Ganieva and the emails from Epstein make us witnesses to the greed that flourishes even on the periphery of Wall Street avarice.”
What was Jeffrey Epstein really doing for Leon Black? That’s what NYT’s Andrew Ross asked author William D. Cohan right away at an event to discuss the book.
Vanity Fair reported:
“’Life is complicated’, Cohan said with some smiling exasperation about 20 minutes into a winding dialogue on the subject. ‘Counselor…I know what he told me. I know he believes it. I know the other party to the conversations and the actions is dead, and there’s no way I can get to the bottom of that’.”
