UPDATE: Joe diGenova Clarifies His “No Evidence” Statement — Says His Comments Were “Taken Out of Context”

UPDATE: Former U.S. Attorney Joe diGenova is pushing back after comments he made following his abrupt departure from the Justice Department’s sweeping investigation into the government’s years-long targeting of President Trump sparked controversy.

The Gateway Pundit reported this afternoon that diGenova had abruptly resigned after just five months on the job. Cristina Laila’s breaking piece noted the move came after the Justice Department had already removed career Miami prosecutor Maria Medetis earlier this year for “stonewalling and slow-walking charges against John Brennan.”

Hours after submitting his resignation letter Thursday as counselor to Attorney General Todd Blanche, the man tapped to run the sprawling “grand conspiracy” / Spygate probe out of South Florida, diGenova got on the phone with New York Post D.C. bureau chief Josh Christenson.

The former U.S. attorney and longtime Trump ally reportedly stepped down after losing support from senior Justice Department and White House officials who had grown frustrated with the pace of the investigation.

But diGenova allegedly fired back at suggestions that he had been “slow-rolling” potential indictments or losing focus.

According to The New York Post:

“Sources said diGenova had lost support from Department of Justice leaders and the White House amid his “grand conspiracy” investigation, with one source suggesting that the 81-year-old prosecutor and former Trump defense lawyer was “slow-rolling” indictments and getting lost down “rabbit holes.”

[…]

“Another source added that the diGenova had been sharing “unrealistic expectations” for the probe with the president about what was possible and not possible, leading to a confrontation with Attorney General Todd Blanche.

New York Post reporter Josh Christenson wrote that when he questioned diGenova about the abrupt departure, the veteran prosecutor responded with a brutal warning:

“If you want indictments where there’s no evidence, you have an ethical problem.”

diGenova just told me by phone when I asked about his abrupt exit:

The remark was quickly interpreted as suggesting prosecutors lacked evidence to bring cases against the figures under investigation.

But diGenova says that is not what he meant.

After the comments began circulating, the Associated Press contacted diGenova again. He told the outlet that his statement had been “taken out of context.”

“There’s plenty of evidence in all of these cases to prove the theories of prosecution. It just takes time to get there, and some people want to get there a little faster than others — and you can’t do that.”

DiGenova was brought into the investigation in April after career prosecutor Maria Medetis Long was removed from the case amid complaints about its slow pace.

At the time, diGenova’s appointment was celebrated as a major development in the effort to finally hold the architects of the Russia hoax accountable.

But warning signs emerged over the summer.

The Gateway Pundit reported in August that investigative journalist John Solomon accused Republican Senators John Thune and Tom Cotton of blocking investigators from obtaining transcripts of Brennan’s testimony before Senate committees.

Solomon also questioned why Blanche had allegedly failed to authorize a subpoena compelling the Senate to produce the records. Blanche rejected the accusation, saying there was “no daylight” between the Justice Department and Republican Senate leaders.

Reuters reported that the Florida investigation has sought to determine whether Trump was the victim of a long-running criminal conspiracy involving previous investigations into Russiagate, the Mar-a-Lago raid, and former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecutions.
