Not long ago Venezuela boasted of having the highest living standards in Latin America and attracted large-scale European and Latin American immigration. By 1970 it was the richest country in the region and ranked among the world’s 20 richest by some GDP-per-capita measures, ahead of Spain, Greece, and Israel.
That all ended when Hugo Chavez, the former tyrant, brought his communist-socialism to the country and destroyed the country. By 2016 73% of Venezuelans reported losing around 19 pounds per individual. By 2017 64% of Venezuelans reported losing 24 pounds per individual.
Then President Trump rescued the people and removed their tyran Nicolas Maduro.
Recently, President Trump announced a massive oil deal with Venezuela, “The BIGGEST oil deal in world history.”

…Trump’s deal in Venezuela is much bigger than just oil.
Okay, here’s the scale of what just happened. In the biggest oil deal in history, President Trump secured a U.S. majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela. Venezuela has 300 billion barrels of known reserves, the largest in the world, and they are the second largest deposits of natural gas in the Americas. Current US oil reserves are about 45 billion, so it provides the United States large access to new reserves. And clearly, it’s an antidote to the overreliance globally on the Persian Gulf.
But look who’s benefiting from the deal. It’s not BlackRock, not an oil major’s boardroom. The US Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital the actual American government, is taking a direct 35% stake in the Venezuelan company North American Blue Energy Partners, which was established in 2024, and all of this is at zero cost to the American taxpayer. This makes the Office of Strategic Capital, the OSC, more like a sovereign wealth fund than a small Pentagon venture capital fund. This may mean even more investments into US industry from the OSC.
The State Department also gets to purchase 20% of all oil produced at cost, which eats at the profits of the private company, not Venezuela’s revenue. And state has the right of first refusal for the rest, meaning during an emergency, the US can secure sufficient oil supplies. So what’s this private company all about? North American Blue Energy Partners is registered in Barbados, with all 3 offices in Venezuela. It has a Venezuelan president and is under the jurisdiction of US law.
The Venezuelan government will set their share of the revenue based on Venezuelan law. It can be as high as 30% of the market value of all oil extracted, plus a 15% tax on monthly gross revenues of that private company. So it’s a good deal. There will be up to $100 billion in new Venezuelan infrastructure and a projected $200 billion for Venezuela in royalties and taxes over the first 25 years. Just to give some perspective, the annual federal budget for Venezuela in 2025 was just $22 billion.
