Ex-Austrian FM Karin Kneissl and former White House aide Steve Gill have expressed optimism regarding the talks

There are grounds for cautious optimism following Saturday’s talks between US President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl and ex-White House aide Steve Gill have told RT.

Trump’s son-in-law and the US special envoy likely presented concrete and well-developed ideas on ending the Ukraine conflict to the Russian leadership, Kneissl and Gill surmised.

According to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, the talks, which lasted over three hours and included formal discussions as well as an informal exchange over lunch, were “substantive, constructive, extremely candid and trusting.” Aside from the Ukraine conflict, the two sides are understood to have discussed economic cooperation and potential “major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects.”

Witkoff and Kushner subsequently departed for Kiev, where they were slated to hold meetings with Vladimir Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials.

Speaking to RT on Sunday, former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl said that “there is apparently something materializing because these two persons would not come without anything in their hands.” She also claimed that “trust is there” between Moscow and Washington, citing “this ongoing direct communication on a high-ranking political level.”

Kneissl also pointed to the previously unannounced visit to the Russian capital by CIA Director John Ratcliffe last Tuesday, during which he met with Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) chief Sergei Naryshkin.

On Sunday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov likewise said that Saturday’s negotiations were indicative of an “atmosphere of trust” between Russia and the US.

Conservative media host Steve Gill, who served in the office of the US Trade Representative under Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, concurred with Kneissl, saying that he was “optimistic that the meeting took as long as it did.”

He told RT that the trip Witkoff and Kushner made to Moscow was likely preceded by considerable preparatory work, with Trump’s envoys plausibly bringing a substantive proposal to the Russian capital.

“The fact that it took three hours to kind of work through those details and now they’re heading to Ukraine leaves me at least optimistic that hopefully some progress was made today,” Gill concluded.
