Virginia Democrat says FBI monitored his calls in corruption probe

Virginia Democrat Rep. Suhas Subramanyam says federal authorities monitored phone conversations he had with a state senator as part of a corruption investigation.

Subramanyam, who previously served as a state lawmaker in Virginia, said in a statement Thursday that the FBI and Department of Justice informed him that they monitored conversations he had with state Senator L. Louise Lucas as part of their investigation of her.

The first-term member of Congress noted what he called the “extremely suspicious” timing of the wiretap between March and May, when Virginia Democrats were at the peak of campaigning for a referendum to enable mid-decade redistricting in the state.

“This should concern anyone who believes in a real Department of Justice that serves the American people and not a singular president,” he said.

In May, the FBI raided the office of Lucas and a retail cannabis business she co-owns as part of the investigation. No charges have been filed and the scope of any investigation remains unknown.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Subramanyam’s statement.
