China Expands Its Arctic Foothold With New ‘Polar Silk Road’ Through Russia

China is moving to establish a permanent commercial foothold in the Arctic by opening a new shipping corridor that could threaten U.S. strategic interests.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Chinese shipping company Sea Legend Line plans to operate eight voyages between China and Europe through Russia’s Northern Sea Route during this year’s Arctic shipping season.

The route cuts across Russia’s northern coastline before entering European waters, allowing Chinese vessels to bypass the Strait of Malacca, Indian Ocean, Red Sea and Suez Canal.

China’s dependence on those traditional shipping lanes has long represented a major strategic vulnerability, particularly in the event of a military confrontation with the U.S. over Taiwan.

Sea Legend tested the corridor last year, when the Istanbul Bridge travelled from China to Felixstowe, England, in roughly 20 days before continuing into continental Europe.

The company now estimates voyages could routinely take around 20 to 22 days, compared with roughly 40 days through the Suez Canal.

The development also deepens the growing strategic partnership between China and Russia.

Moscow has spent years developing the Northern Sea Route, while Western sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine have made Russia increasingly dependent on China for investment and energy purchases.

Despite having no Arctic coastline, the Chinese government declared its intention in 2018 to develop a “Polar Silk Road” and eventually establish regular commercial shipping through the region.

China and Russia have meanwhile expanded military and coast guard cooperation in the Arctic, including joint operations near Alaska.

Russia operates approximately 42 icebreakers, while China itself possesses more than the United States despite having no Arctic territory.

Washington currently has just two operational icebreakers, although the Coast Guard has begun a major expansion program.

The Pentagon has explicitly identified the Arctic as strategically vital, warning that growing Sino-Russian cooperation could increase Beijing’s military and economic influence.

Arctic shipping remains seasonal and vulnerable to extreme weather and dangerous ice conditions, meaning it will not replace existing trade routes anytime soon.

Trump himself has repeatedly highlighted the Arctic’s growing strategic importance through his so far unsuccessful efforts to bring Greenland under U.S. control.
