Ex-Cambridge professor who resigned over plagiarism row found dead

Jason Arday left his position at the prestigious university’s sociology department last week due to the scandal

Jason Arday, the former University of Cambridge professor who recently resigned amid allegations of plagiarism and misrepresenting his credentials, was found dead in his home on Friday, police said in a statement cited by the media. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Arday, 41, was recognized as the youngest-ever black professor at the institution when he joined as a professor of sociology of education in 2023. He resigned from that position after he was accused of plagiarizing his 2015 PhD dissertation and questions arose regarding his academic posts and other achievements. Arday denied the plagiarism allegations.

The Metropolitan Police said first responders called officers to the academic’s south London home on Friday afternoon after finding him “unresponsive.” He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“At this time, his death is being treated as unexpected but is not believed to be suspicious,” the police said.

The academic’s resignation came just two days after Cambridge announced that it had launched an investigation into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments, as the wider controversy burst into the spotlight. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded him his PhD, had carried out its own probe but did not uphold the plagiarism allegations.

The scandal first erupted last month, when former Cambridge researcher Nathan Cofnas accused Arday of copying large parts of his dissertation from a 2009 thesis by then-Brunel University student Paula Zwozdiak-Myers.

“Many passages are lifted with minimal editing, sometimes retaining copy-editing mistakes from the original source,” he wrote, calling Arday a “plagiarist and fabulist.”

According to a detailed investigation by The Guardian, several institutions have disputed Arday’s claims regarding his academic posts and achievements, while police contradicted his account of an investigation into alleged racial abuse.

After being approached by a journalist investigating the alleged plagiarism, Arday allegedly reported him to the authorities.

UK police must give up ‘woke culture wars’ and fight crime – report

According to Jack Grove, a reporter at Times Higher Education, the police told him they had received a complaint and warned him not to contact the professor again “because it was affecting his mental health.”

UK police have faced several controversies and accusations concerning ‘two-tier’ policing.

The debate reignited in June after bodycam footage was released showing the arrest of Henry Nowak after he had been stabbed by 23-year-old Vickrum Singh Digwa. The 18-year-old lay mortally wounded in handcuffs as officers  dismissed his repeated pleas that he’d been stabbed after his attacker falsely accused him of racism. One officer’s words, “Don’t think you have, mate,” ignited lasting public outrage over the event.
