The Department of War has given defense contractors until late August to propose “significantly faster” delivery schedules, according to a memo seen by US media
The Pentagon is pressing US arms makers to accelerate production as the ongoing war with Iran depletes critical weapons stockpiles, the Washington Post reported on Saturday, citing a Department of War memo to industry leaders.
The memo, written by Deputy Secretary of War Steve Feinberg and reportedly sent earlier this week, gives manufacturers 21 days to propose “significantly faster” and “more aggressive” delivery schedules, expanded production capacity, or both.
“Years-long development cycles are not acceptable,” Feinberg wrote. “We must dramatically accelerate our program schedules and expand our production capacity now.”
The memo identifies several critical programs, including next-generation air-defense equipment, surface-to-air missile systems, satellite communications, and space-based missile tracking. Feinberg also called on industry leaders to propose investments and facility expansions to support “higher volume, sustained orders.”
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed to the media on Saturday that the memo is real and will help shape the fiscal 2028 budget, calling it “consistent with our ongoing push to rebuild the defense industrial base.”
While Parnell said the effort is part of a broader modernization drive predating the Iran war, it comes after months of fighting that have depleted already diminished US munitions stocks.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated last month that Patriot interceptor stocks fell from 2,330 before the war to 1,030 by the April ceasefire and now stand at 759 to 827 – down at least 65%. THAAD interceptors dropped from 452 to 234-278 – at least 38% below pre-war levels. The US also reportedly fired more than 1,300 Army tactical ballistic missiles during the initial weeks of fighting alone.
US President Donald Trump has vehemently denied any shortages, accusing the media of spreading misinformation. Earlier this week, he insisted on Truth Social that the US has “massive amounts” of weaponry. In later comments to reporters, he acknowledged that supplies of some unspecified systems are “a little bit tighter,” but maintained that stockpiles remain “literally massive,” with replacements arriving daily. Nevertheless, Trump reiterated that he would not give Patriots to Ukraine, which has long demanded more of the systems, saying “we want missiles too.”
The Pentagon has spent recent months trying to turn up the production dial. Last week, it announced a framework agreement with Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin to boost output of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) and THAAD missiles. A similar deal has been agreed with RTX’s Raytheon to increase production of Tomahawk and several other missile systems. In May, the Pentagon also struck agreements with Anduril, Castelion, CoAspire, Leidos, and Zone 5 to expand strike capabilities and procure lower-cost missiles.
However, experts say the framework agreements are legally non-binding and hinge on congressional funding, specifically the proposed $1.15 trillion defense bill that remains deadlocked after Senate Democrats blocked it in mid-July, opposing the massive spending increase and Trump’s military action against Iran without congressional approval.

US taxpayers also appear increasingly skeptical. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday found that just 35% of Americans approve of US military action in Iran, while other polls have indicated broad opposition to Iran war spending and the White House’s trillion-dollar-plus military budget.
US-Iran peace efforts remain stalled after a Pakistan-brokered interim agreement reached in mid-June quickly unraveled amid renewed skirmishes and tanker attacks, with both sides trading blame for violations.
On Saturday, Iran laid out new conditions for talks, demanding Washington lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, withdraw forces “from the area surrounding Iran,” remove “unjust and illegal” sanctions, release frozen Iranian assets, and pay compensation before negotiations can resume.
