‘PALACE REVOLT’: While Failing German Chancellor Merz Relaxes on Vacation, His Party Plots His Removal

Enjoy your vacations, Friedrich.

We have been reporting here on TGP that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz now has the lowest poll numbers in German history.

This has become unbearable to his CDU party, as right-wing AfD seems poised to win one state election and make stellar showings in the other two, including in the Berlin region.

This pretty much guarantees that other parties will join coalitions with the dreaded ‘far-right’, the fantasy boogeyman that the MSM and establishment politicians try to use to control voters.

So, in desperation, the CDU reportedly plans to resort to an expedient only used three times in history: the Kanzlertausch, a ‘change at the top of the federal government without the government coalition being dissolved or new elections being held’.

Or, as Der Spiegel’s cover story calls it: a ‘Palace Revolt’.

Politico reported:

“The theory behind a Kanzlertausch is that the conservatives will need to stem the fallout from the eastern elections and give themselves a boost by replacing a leader unable to shake his rock-bottom ratings.

But the stakes are high. The AfD — now the most popular party in national polls — would seek to capitalize on further coalition unrest. Replacing a chancellor years before the end of his term would mean venturing into largely uncharted political territory.”

Two men in glasses, one serious and one smiling, set against a vibrant pink background, likely representing a political or professional context.
Merz and Wüst

The coup plotters plan to replace him with Hendrik Wüst, the premier of the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

“The growing discontent, they said, reflected declining trust in the chancellor’s statesmanship and his expected inability to keep the party together if the AfD takes power in September.

Polls show that the AfD could win an outright majority in Saxony-Anhalt on Sept. 6, while it is poised to win in Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania and do well in Berlin on Sept. 20.”
